This time of year, there are lots of TV ads touting affordable dental insurance plans. And if you spend any time on the internet, you are bombarded by online ads for “cheap dental insurance.” BEWARE!!! Before you sign up for any dental insurance plan, read the fine print!!! Many of these plans promise low monthly fees, but the coverage you get in return is often disappointing. Before you purchase any dental plan, you should ask the following questions:
-Will you be able to see the dentist of your choice? If you are required to see a contracted dentist, is there one near you?
-What is the monthly cost for coverage?
-What is the deductible? Does it apply to cleanings too?
-Is there an annual limit to benefits that will be paid? If so, is that limit reasonable compared to the monthly fee you will be paying?
-How much does the plan cover for preventive services like dental cleanings, exams, x-rays, sealants and fluoride?
-How much does the plan cover for basic services such as fillings, root canals, oral surgery (including extractions) and treatment of gum disease?
-How much does the plan cover for major services like crowns, bridges, dentures, and partial dentures? • Does the plan cover dental implants, or orthodontics (braces)?
-Is there a waiting period before part or all of the benefits are available?
These are all important questions to ask BEFORE you sign up for a dental plan. If you need help understanding the details of a plan, please call us at 582-CARE.
